Berlie Street, Langford Town
“2, Berlie Street, Langford Town, Bangalore”, was the address I had on a chit of paper. Walking through the streets of Langford Town searching for the destined address I came across “Rhenius Street”, “Curly Street”, “Eagle Street”, “Elephanta Street”, “Alexander Street” “Moyenville Road” and many more streets with English names. This part of the city gave a totally different picture of Bangalore – ancient Bangalore(of the time of English rule) with the tinge of modernity. There was an air of art and artists around the place with places like Jaaga, GallerySke around.
Just right down the Berlie Street, the address which I was searching for, is the GallerySke. A bright white building with a large open space around, adorned with plants and trees, is a 100 year old colonial house. The different rooms inside the building are used for the exhibitions.
The Garden inside the Campus
GallerySke, the art gallery, was started in 2003 by Sunitha Kumar Emmart. The place has been now associated with the one of the most progressive and engaging works of contemporary Indian art as told by one of the associates of the GallerySke. Its not only the paintings and photography but they also exhibit works ranging from sculpture and installation, video, performance, graphic prints. The other day I visited the gallery, the work being displayed was of one of the artist Susanta Mandala. The exhibition displayed his usage of steel and glass for producing electricity.
GallerySke is a place for all types of arts. They are also involved in Outreach programme for students where the students visit the different exhibitions and the artists encourage and promote them to create their own works.
