Bangalore Bird Watch, 17th Feb 2013

Hi All

What started out as an informal idea amongst a few friends has got a bit
carried away, and we’d therefore like to invite others to take part in a
co-ordinated birdwatching activity in the Bangalore area this Sunday, 17
February. A few of us thought it would be interesting to spend a day birding
not together but spread out in different habitats, and then see what species
we would have recorded between us all. We decided on a few sites to cover
but gradually introduced more and more, and a few more people. The aim is to
concentrate on thorough and reliable observations, spending as much time at
a site as we think it justifies. Different sites/routes have been allocated
amongst us, and anyone else is welcome to join these on the day. The plan of
approximate routes (with main contacts) is as follows:

North

Hessarghatta area – Sachin Shurpali shurpali@gmail.com

Hebbal Lake, GKVK, Yelahanka, Jakkur, Rampura – James Williams

Rao Abhijith.Rao@in.ey.com

All these intend to start in the early morning, and most will be full day
sessions. If you are interested in joining one of these groups then please
email the given contact(s) above directly. They will let you know where and
when they plan to be, and you are welcome to find them and join in. Each
group will complete a checklist for each site they visit, with a
concentration on relaxed birding and confirmed identifications. After the
day we’ll consolidate and publish the findings from all checklists.

This wasn’t meant to be such a big thing, but if all goes well we may look
to expand and improve on it in the future.

If you have any questions about it then please email me. Enjoy the day!

Cheers
– Mike –

Woke up at 5 and decided to head straight towards Ragihalli yet again to catch the early morning birds…After i finished the piping hot coffee, i stepped out into the balcony to see that the morning was quite windy and dark. Felt lazy to drive all this distance and I decided to check out Kaikondrahalli lake instead which is just next to my home. Quite strange that i have never visited this place even though its just so near.(“ghar ki murgi daal baraabar” affect i guess :) )

I was screened and welcomed by two well fed dogs at the enterance of the lake and they seemed ok with my presence. The lake is quite vast and spread out though its not quite evident from the main road. I was quite early and the regular walkers and joggers were yet to hit the track. Surprisingly the early morning was quite devoid of birds and it took some time before the chirps became evident. The back side of the lake has an area which is densely populated with trees and it looks quite serene.

The lake was full of Common Moorhens and the usual black cormorants. Apart from that it had some Common Coot and Spot Billed Duck as well. I found the Spot billed Ducks beak quite interesting.

By around 7 AM,  the regulars of the lake streamed in and birds also started making its presence felt. My todays prize catch was a Kingfisher, Purple sun bird and a Great tit. I could get a relatively decent picture of ashy prinia as well.

Great Tit – Not a great picture but this was the best i could get. It was so restless!

And finally my favourite…The bee eaters…they are most co-operative and allow one and all to take as many pictures…! Never get tired of watching and taking snaps of them.

All in all an eventful morning. This place has lot of potential and has the potential to become a hot-spot for birds. Due to the rampant construction happening around and some temporary gypsy encroachments, the surroundings are quite dirty. I guess over a period of time it will improve. Lets hope for the best.

Better late than never…publishing my blog entry here as well…

Want the sure shot recipie to happiness? Approach anything with an open mind and jump into the frey with minimal expectation and everything will work like a charm! This happened to me for the Sarjapur trek which was planned for 24th July 6:30 AM. The devils had to shake me up to wake me that day as i had slept only 5 hours. I had almost made up my mind not to go and something in me at the last moment pushed me out of the warm and cozy bed.

The day was crisp and not cloudy like the previous day and the bike ride of 10 km from my house was nice and breezy with the early morning cool winds cutting through me. The place was Sompura gate which is a km before Sarjapur. I reached dot at 6:30 and there were just 4 to 5 people and Prarthana took us inside her farm house and showed us the place. A nice and plush home inside a beautiful and large farm land with trees and a nice and large backyard with a lot of open space. Within 10 min, few more people joined and we started to walk. I somehow did not have any expectation and was not expecting too many bird sightings. The moment we left the main road and started taking the mud road, the open grounds were teeming with birds. Sunbirds, robins and Silverbills invited us right away shortly followed by the black drongos.

I also got the opportunity to have good sighting of Yellow and Red watlled lapwings. The yellow wattled lapwing, which is supposed to be a rare sighting was there in huge numbers…

I had my first sighting of Black shouldered Kite and Zitting Cisticola as well(Yes, i admit unabashedly that i am a newbie to birds…). The walk was made so much more interesting with the informative discussions on birds that i had with Glen and also Sandra played a perfect host by showing us the right spots and  the right places where we could spot birds.

All in all a very eventfull and satisfying morning. Some pics are attached…

.

I could not resist the temptation and revisited the place almost 2 weeks after that with 2 of my enthusiastic birding friends…and lo behold we were yet again rewarded with 2 more beautifull sightings…Common Hoopoe and a Red headed Falcon. happy like a Hoopoe!

3rd Sunday, our birding was at Koppa Gate and near areas. Finishing at Koppa Gate, me and Ganesh planned to go Ragihalli too, though we came back from the very outer of Ragihalli, but it was fun.

First of all, thanks to Geetanjali for showing us the path of one more treasure near Bangalore. Anekal Lake is a big lake and almost every variety of water bird is available at its edge.

Hoping to see a Post by Sushil soon.

First of all, when we reached we had the same expression .. oh same water birds, but I guess this lake give a better chance to explore water birds despite of the fact that water level was quite less.

Here goes some kingfishers, except white throated kingfisher, water is must for other two.

Lot of fish were died at the side of the lake, don’t know the reason but neither human nor birds were interested in that.

And finally the bird of prey, a majestic black kite in flight. There was lot of “Birds of Prey” every time I saw from my lens to upside, I wished to have other than black kite but .. .. ..

Sarjapur – a new treasure

4th Sunday – Yes, Cricket Match was in afternoon. But in morning, we decided to visit a new place for birding. Thanks to Prarthana who explored a new place for birding. On the way itself, I put a hard brake to my bike. Sushil and Priyanka asked what happened, I replied a big tail bird backside. Sushil turned up and said .. Seems to be flycatcher. It was Rufous Treepie, even after a big time chase we were not able to let our camera know that it was a Rufous Treepie. Meanwhile, we saw Greater Coucal, Barbet, Sunbirds and a sunrise. Resumed back the journey, we reached to “Wikimapia coordinates 12.8611444N 77.7712834E” (Yes, that’s the best place to describe place).

My 10th visit to Ragihalli

This weekend was not different from other weekends. And why to make it different when I get a chance to enjoy with nature, listen the rares and shot the colors. After deciding the place, me and Sushil reached to Ragihalli on Saturday. Though we know the birding group(bngbirds) going at the same place on Sunday but if treasure is big, we need at least 2 days.

We stopped our bikes at the hotspot of Ragihalli. Though burnt grassland gave a sense of bad feeling but we moved inside and as said, treasure were waiting. Huuppp-Huuuppp, huuupp-huuupp and this first bird I got was Hoopoe. A lovely bird and not very common. Moving forward, we say Black shouldered Kite, what a lovely bird it is.. we got busy in admiring the beauty of that bird, till that time it ran away. We got her back again. A dense tree with one side a White breasted Kingfisher sitted, one side a coppersmith barbet, one side two parakeet were playing and in the center a spotted owlet was watching us.. Alright, One by one :)

I loved it. But we were in a short time frame and heart was saying NO but work demanded us to back. Sunday we had to join the birding group. And here came Sunday. When we reached, we saw hundred of people(hmm, may be 50), waiting for sunrise. Deepa told, it was supposed to be at 6.20 AM. Nevertheless, idea was to go to Ramakrishna Mission School ,Shivanahalli(Ashrama). Just entering into the place, as usual, I liked the words of Vivekanand written on the wall…”To be good and to do good, that is the whole of religion”. Swami ji had taken us in the forest area, which is in parallel to National Park area. Flycatcher, one of us said. I can sense it, Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher has a lovely water flowing sound. We got it, she was sitting near bike’s mirror and watching her face in mirror.. o man, you got a lovely face :) ).
