The Collections

The Collections- A shopping mall to call it, but it has many things to attract you. The first thing is its architectural beauty.

Located in the heart of the city and in a well known street, Vittal Mallya Road. This can be called as one of the most expensive shopping place where the products are worldclass. Not many shops as seen in other regular malls.

There are many good hotels and restaurants especially to have your dinner. There you get to see many people from other countries spending their time and relaxing. The UB city office is very next to this mall.

In most of the seasons, the mall is decorated with many attractions. Weekend is comparatively crowded and a flavor of colorful nightlife is seen there which is missing in this city all the time.

If you do not live in Bangalore and planning to visit sometime, this is one of the place, you can mark in your list.

The Parsi Tower of Silence, BIAL Road

On my way to and from the Bangalore International Airport, one building often catches my eye:

I have long known the custom of the Parsi community to dispose of their dead by exposing the bodies to the elements and to the sun. I vaguely remember being shown a “Tower of Silence” in Mumbai, many decades ago.

I googled for “Tower of Silence”, and got this link about

Dakhma, transliterated as “Tower of Silence”

I was not sure if the Tower of Silence in Bangalore is being used now…but a little digging produced

this link to an article in the Hindu

…which seems to say that it was, at least, nearly three years ago. Today? I do not know.

Instead of being in a remote area, it is now right alongside a major highway; and in any case, vultures, the main birds who would feed on carrion, are so depleted in this area that there is just a tiny population about a dozen birds or less, in Ramnagara, even though the article says the lack of vultures is not an issue.

As I seem to see this place only whizzing past on the way to the airport or to Nandi Hills, I asked my friend Bhavita Toliya to click a few photographs, and though she didn’t venture into the place, she sent me this beautiful photo of the winged-disk design:

1940 seems, (71 years ago), not all that distant a date in history when this place was constructed; and it serves as a reminder of how rapid the change in our city has been.

There is also an inscription in Gujrati, of which I can read only the first two words, “Sri Jahangir”….

I do wonder what the rest of the plaque says.

Bhavita was told that another place has been acquired, and this will probably be “developed” into an apartment complex.

And so, perhaps, another landmark of our city will disappear….

For the people living in Bangalore, its almost rare that someone has not passed by Cubbon park. A wide spreaded forest area, located in the heart of the city. There are small big trees all around, contributing to the name of the city as Garden City. Roads running all around and across the park. There are 5 entrances to this big forest area.

During night, its gets a beautiful look with lights on. Intentionally or unintentionally I always try to divert my route through this place to have some cool fresh air.

In the central part, there is a round shaped grass land, roads running around. Especially Sunday evening is a good time to see a huge crowd there. Mostly the families with kids, spending time together, sitting, relaxing on the grass, playing some games etc.

District Library:

The red color building is a good attraction obviously for the people landing there for the first time. I never got a chance to go inside this District Library. Needless to menton, the building draws attention for its rich architecture. In the night, the red color of the building gets more brighter with the focusing of bright light on it.

A closer view of the building.

A house from history….

I went to attend a wildlife photography workshop by Rathika Ramaswamy, for Pixetra…but that’s not what this post is about. As I walked to the venue, I saw this old house…

I mused on when the house was built, how proud the owner (Mr Vaz) must have been to see this bungalow coming up in the beautiful city of Bangalore….here, you can see his name in the gate-post, and the name of the present owner…

I can say, “It Vas a nice house, once!”

Today, the house is taken over by weeds, and in the grip of Strangler Figs:

The old order changeth, yielding place to new….I wonder what has kept this house from disappearing, too, with a multi-storied glass-and-chrome building taking its place…litigation, is the most likely answer.

A little torn page out of Bangalore’s history; no doubt, it will soon flutter into oblivion.

NTACH Bangalore invites you to the  next Parichay, which will take place on 26 June 2011, at Nandi and Sultanpet, near Nandi Hills. A heritage walk here gives you the chance to walk through 1000 years of history and architecture! There is plenty to see including a temple dating back to the 9th century, a tiny 200-year-old cemetery from the days of the Raj, and a ruined but beautiful mosque attributed to Tipu Sultan. There will also be a visit to a potters’ community.

There is a fee of Rs. 120/- for this Parichay. There are limited seats so please email ahead to register. INTACH will respond to you.

Bus Stop Design….

I find that BBMP/BMTC combination  has been experimenting with various designs for bus stops…but still, a very vital piece is missing from almost every bus stop that I see. This…is a board that should, at the very least, announce what bus routes are going through the stop. Why is there no provision for this essential piece of information on any bus stop, when there seems to be so much space devoted to advertising?

Another instance of the BMTC/BBMP being less  user-friendly than they should be. All it takes is a little imagination..or observation, when our top officials go junketing to Singapore to “learn” from the public transport there.

I went to conduct an interview yesterday, and from the 11th floor of the building (guess which one it is!) I took these shots of central Bangalore as it is today (or was, yesterday…maybe a couple more buildings have mushroomed!!)

Prof Ramani of TTK says that he used to be able to see clear up to Nandi Hills!

Yesterday, thanks to Vittal I went to visit the Nimishamba temple in the village of Ganjam, 2 km from Srirangapatna. It was a lovely visit, to a temple peacefully set on the banks of the Kaveri. As photography inside the main temple is banned, I could click only these deities in the outer “prAkAram”…but look at the beautiful way they have been adorned! Here’s Ganesha: vinayaka nmshmba tmpl 290311 and here’s Anjaneya or Hanuman: anjnya nmshmba tmpl 290311 More photographs, and a short account, are here Here is the gopura of the temple, smiling in the sunshine: nmshmba tmpl gprm 290311 The visit, and the trip to Ranganathittu, were wonderful and could not be blighted by the loss of my mobile phone early in the morning!

I was walking past the new Corporation Bank building in JP Nagar, and found that wheelchair access was provided:
wheelchair access corpn bk 130910
This got me thinking, and I started looking at other public buildings…and private ones too…and was saddened to find that in very, very few of them was wheelchair access provided.

Why can’t we, at the construction stage, take a little extra effort and provide wheelchair access? This would be so helpful to those whose mobility is restricted. One of the best examples I have seen, of a wheelchair ramp beautifully integrated into the steps, is at Alliance Francaise de Bangalore. One can hardly see that it’s there!

Even the Mini Forest is inaccessible to wheelchairs…it’s as if, unconsciously, we exclude our brothers and sisters who need wheels to move around.

Thanks to the Corporation Bank for being sensitive…now they need to move the generator so that it doesn’t block the access.

Bangalore Club…New Year Decorations

It was lovely to see the decorations at Bangalore Club for the New Year.

Here’s the main building, and the majestic 100-year-old conifers:

Brigadier Hill Annexe was also lit up:

And so was the passage between the two:
