Bandipur National Park

Bandipur National Park- a tryst with the wild side

Deer at Bandipur

There are places around Bangalore which are perfect for adventure activities. In fact, a whole range of activities are possible around Bangalore- from trekking to rafting and everything else. But if you are looking for a really wild experience, Bandipur National Park is the place to be. Located on the Ooty-Mysore highway, you will have a thrilling adventure at this national reserve that you would never forget.

Bandipur National Park is located about 200 km from Bangalore. You can always take your bikes or car and drive down to the destination, which take about four hours. The roads are in pretty good condition, so driving on the highway shouldn’t be a fuss for you. For the best on-road experience, try and leave early in the morning, when the sun’s fury is at a minimum. There are quite a few picturesque spots that you will come across on the way to Bandipur National Park.

Landscape of Bandipur National Park

The forest reserve is blessed with lush greenery all around. The amiable climate of the place throughout the year and the Moyar River which feeds the jungles means you get to see plenty of varied flora in the place. In fact, the time right after the monsoon season is the best if you are looking to explore the flora of the region.

There are plenty of lodges around the periphery of the jungle which are maintained by the forest department. They offer a very decent accommodation, although you can never be sure about water safety issues. Thus, it is always better to carry your own mineral water around when visiting Bandipur National Park.

If you would like to camp in the forest, you would have to take the permission of the Forest Ranger, which is a difficult task. As far as jungle safari is concerned, you have two options. You can either take a 45 minute bus safari, or you could opt for a jeep safari.

A bus safari may not be the best of experiences for you, especially if you are visiting on a weekend, since it is jam-packed with people. A better option instead is to take the jeep safari, which is also of 45 minute duration.

Safaris are broken down into two halves- the morning half which lasts till 11 am and the evening half which starts post 4 pm. There are a lot of different animal species which inhabit the jungle including Indian Bison, tigers, leopards, elephants and a lot more. However, you need to be lucky to spot all these in a single safari of the jungle.

Most people are excited about seeing the tiger roaming about in the wild. If you too are a tiger or a leopard enthusiast, your best chance would be to take the night safari. Carnivores generally venture out of their holes at night in search of food.

There is an elephant ride too available for kids. However, it is not a safari, but is fun nevertheless. If you have kids with you, make sure you let them have the elephant ride.

There is trekking to be done too

Wildlife spotting isn’t the only adventure possible in Bandipur National Park. Although trekking inside the forest is banned, you can still get your trekking fill at Gopalswamy Betta. With a height of more than 1400 meter above sea level, trekking on this hill is an enriching experience. The top of the hill houses an old fort which dates back to the 13th century.

But the real highlight of the trek is the view of the valley you get from the top. And the perpetual winds that blow at the place just take your breath away. If you are trekking during early morning hours or during the winter season, you could also come across the famed mist which covers the top of the hill. It is a sight to behold.

Best time to visit Bandipur National Park

It is a perpetual destination, with different delights in different times of the year. If you are interested in elephant spotting more than anything else, the winter months are your best bet. If you would rather explore the rich flora of the place, monsoon months and the months immediately after that are the best time to visit Bandipur National Park. However, if you are visiting the reserve during
monsoon months, make sure you carry raincoats with you, since umbrellas are little use against the torrential rains and wind.

Many a times, adventure seekers are interested in spotting the beasts of the jungle. If that’s the case with you too, the months of March to May are the best. The drier months see the animals flocking to the lakes in the jungles to quench their thirst. However, these months are also the peak tourist season here. Thus, it is better to make travel and accommodation arrangements beforehand if you are travelling during these months.

Don’t miss a single part of this!

From beginning to end, it’s wonderful….

How much will this be used?

Most pedestrians and cyclists in the city can attest to the fact that Bangalore is as unfriendly as it can be, to them.

In the wake of the recent fuel hike, I was looking at my photographs when I saw this one, that I took last November…

helipad 061111 blr club

That’s the helipad at U B City, on Grant, sorry, Vittal Mallya Road.

And I was wondering….how often is that helipad going to be used, given the present (and future) price of hi-octane aircraft fuel? (Helicopters cannot run on kerosene….)

Oh, we have the eye-catchers, but do we have anything below that to support it at ground level?

We are delighted to tell you that PNLIT has been shortlisted for the People’s Green Award instituted as part of the TCS World 10K. Public voting and Jury assessment will together decide the final three winners.

PNLIT is a local people’s initiative to tackle the problem of dying lakes and water shortage through public participation. We were instrumental in getting the Puttenahalli Lake restored and are the first citizens’ group in Bangalore to officially maintain a lake. We work within a very tight budget from donations made mostly by individual well wishers.

The People’s Green Award will help us get some financial support and also encourage others to take up lake restoration in their neighbourhood. Together we can save more lakes and avert the impending water crisis in our city.

Women Safety Awareness on Modern Crime, Psychological Preparation against Fear
& Israeli Krav Maga Self Defense Tactics Sessions against Molestation, Eve-Teasing & Rape.

Why do you need this?

In the past few years, Bangalore ranks 2nd in overall crime rate reported in India beating Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai & Kolkata. Rape on Indian women has increased 763% from 1972. Kidnapping has increased 543% since 1953. Our India stands at the top three countries with the highest sexualy abused children in the world. Blaming the polities, police or our legal system is not enough. Women have to stand up and get educated & prepared to deal with such evil which can destroy her dignity or extinguish her life. Maybe it would never happen to you, but do you really want to take a chance hoping it might never happen.

What is Power to Women Safety Awareness Camp?

Power to Women would prepares the participants in the following subjects:

  • How to manage fear and convert it into confidence
  • What kind of women predator is looking for a victim
  • How to be invisible to sexual predator’s radar
  • Focus on prevention, avoidance and escape before or during the threat NOT on fighting it out.
  • Self-realization of your own physical power – you are ready irrespective of your size, strength or fitness level.
  • Awareness against latest crimes & Understanding a predators game plan and how to defeat it
  • Recognize Pre-Conflict Indicators and be Aware of Post-Conflict Dangers
  • Pre-Assault Situation Awareness & Conflict Prevention from being chosen a victim via attitude, body posture etc.

  • Risk avoidance using Preventive & Avoidance Israeli Soft Tactics against Domestic Violence, Kidnapping & Molestation / Eve-teasing and Sexual Abuse
  • Various Israeli Self Defense drills of defense against Wrist grabs, Groping, Chokes, Knife Robbery, Rape, In-Transit inside a Car Molestation etc.
  • Usage of Self Protection tool like Electric Shock Stun gun, Pocket Sticks Key Chain, Daily objects like Magazines, Water bottle & Umbrella etc

We are not teaching martial arts, why not ?

  • Lot of traditional martial arts depends on few factors like strength, fitness, starting from young age & flexibility.
  • Hence most of the Indian women do not feel fit enough, strong enough or young enough to take up self defense.
  • Physiologically from childhood, girls are taught to be nice all the time no matter how bad things are around them, just keep quite & take in all the abuse.
  • They are told that if they say no or resist the man by fighting who would be more angry and abuse & physically hurt them more.
  • Learning how to punch and kick is not effective enough to ward off any danger either from a stranger or someone you know, psychological preparation is the key for new mantra for survival any any street crimes.

Benefits of Power to Women Safety Awareness Workshop

Power to Women merges Israeli Krav Maga Self Defense tactics with Safety Awareness & Psychological Preparation Program especially designed keeping Indian women in mind with inputs from our psychologist Mrs. Ottilie Kumar.

As everything evolves in time, self defense given by traditional martial arts are still stuck in the stone age. It’s expects today’s women to be fitter and stronger like a man and ask them to adapt themselves into the rigid system of traditional martial arts.

Israeli self defense system is adapted from human reflex actions so its easy to learn. Practical Training would embedded the tactics into your muscle-memory (reflex actions) so you can still do your defense when your brain shuts down under violent stressfully attack. Psychological preparation & safety awareness theory session would make you more smarter to understand who, where and how these men might attack you verbally, emotionally, physically & sexually.

I cannot be a expert in a two day camp?

No, you cannot, but it’s a start to something wonderful. The feeling that you are not small, weak or alone and you can avoid 78% of the threats by just gaining the education of how to avoid, prevent and escape such threats. We will introduce you to certain Israeli Krav Maga tactics.

On a lighter note (we saw this bird) and hence this question popped up.
Did you some one you asked did not disclose this location ?

In other words, was I sour-graping because I was not being told the location of this (or any othe recently discovered) bird?

My response to him:

Ha, ha, Vinaya, I know better than to ask for the location! Have I asked you? (I know you saw it.) No, it’s not a case of sour grapes…in fact, the reverse, as I have given the location of various birds to many expert birders, after discovering them by sheer accident (eg . Indian Eagle Owl at Ramnagara or Turahalli.) I can confidently say, go look in Valley School, you will find the Indian Eagle Owl. This does not guarantee that the person will see it!

I am a well-known “L-birder”….I have neither the  knowledge nor the scientific background to quality. :) Neither will I ask where the Pratincole, or the Emu, or the Mute Swan,  the Roc, or the Phoenix,  are to be found. Most birds will, for me, be found only within the covers of my Grimmskipp , Salam Salim, Pam Aunty, or Kashmirjack. You think I will go on a ship-without-a-toilet to see pelagic birds? The answer is, Gua—no!

We’ve already had the hilarious situation, in Lalbagh, of a totally non-bird interested jogger coming up and telling us, “Some crows are harassing some bird which I don’t know, can you help?” It proved to be the Mottled Wood Owl. No  humans (birders or non-birders)  were troubling it…but it was the ever-present mobsters, the crows. The Mottled Wood Owls, in spite of the Lalbagh crowds, have been at their location off and on over the years.

My birding friends here  in St.Louis, Mark Glenshaw, Chris Ferree, Mary Dueren (Audubon Society)  and Danny Brown (Wildlife photographer and conservation scientist) , freely share the location of birds and animals in Forest Park, with me. That doesn’t mean that I can see them all the time! In fact, in the heights and the thick foliage  of the Cottonwood trees, even when Mark is showing me where the  huge female Great Horned Owl is sitting…it takes me several minutes to spot her. It took me a week of scouting the right area before I saw the mink family, and the little baby mink came up to my feet and looked up at me!

Oh well…there are valid things about both points of view (share and don’t share)  and ne’er the twain shall meet…unfortunately, birding is becoming a “I-know-so-and-so-who-will-tell-me-where-x-bird-is-to-be-found” kind of activity. This is why I like my UGS (Usual Gang of Suspects)…we are a happy-go-lucky lot who are as thrilled to see an Agama in front of the Udupi Banashree Darshini as we are to see a Crested Hawk Eagle at Nandi Hills! We don’t want the secret birds……where the ordinary birds are, is secret enough for us most of the time!

Cheers, Deepa.

The Collections

The Collections- A shopping mall to call it, but it has many things to attract you. The first thing is its architectural beauty.

Located in the heart of the city and in a well known street, Vittal Mallya Road. This can be called as one of the most expensive shopping place where the products are worldclass. Not many shops as seen in other regular malls.

There are many good hotels and restaurants especially to have your dinner. There you get to see many people from other countries spending their time and relaxing. The UB city office is very next to this mall.

In most of the seasons, the mall is decorated with many attractions. Weekend is comparatively crowded and a flavor of colorful nightlife is seen there which is missing in this city all the time.

If you do not live in Bangalore and planning to visit sometime, this is one of the place, you can mark in your list.
